「河童」
そうだよ。
俺もここには二百年近く住んでるんだ。
馬鹿じゃない。人間の言葉くらいは覚えるさ。
はじめの方のやつらはわれわれを水神様じゃ水神様じゃ言うてな。
なんかありゃ野菜やら酒やらなんやかんやと供えに来て
そりゃもう年に一度の祭りの夜なんか「女じゃ！肉じゃ！！」言うてな。
子供を追い回し焚き火を囲んで踊りに踊って一晩中騒ぎ回ったものさ。ありゃ楽しかった。
ところが連中。
いいときはいいんだが、どうも日照りが続いて作物が取れなくなってくると
だんだんと手のひらを変えて来てな。
そこに川の水から流行病ときたもんだ。
村の子供や老人からみるみる毒におかされてしもうた。
顔や手足が腫れ内臓が腐ってな。まあ、そりゃ地獄だったよ。
月日が経って毒は流れたんだが見事に貧困だけはのこってな。
われわれ仲間がイタズラで馬なんかを溺れさせようもんなら
村人総出で追い回されるようになってしもうた。
その頃にはもうお供えなんてとんでもない。
なにせ村の子供や老人に食べさせるようなものもないんだ。
われわれが畑に入ろうもんなら犬をけしかけたり棒で殴りかかったり中には
殺されるものまで出てしもうた。
まあ、そ時には俺たちも無理に人間に近づこうなんて考えとうになかったな。
森にあるもので充分、生活もできておったしな。

ただ一つ問題があってな。
われわれ、河童にも神様がいる。
その神様が30年に一度、人間の処女の尻子玉をよこせとおっしゃる。
あ、尻子玉ってのは魂みたいなもんだが、まあ生肝だと思えばええ。
だもんで、人間との関わりを絶っとったんだけどもどうもこうもういかんくなってな。
まあ30年に一度のことだでわれわれも仕方なくな。
川で遊びよるおなごを3人ばかし
襲って獲って贄にして捧げた。
その夜は酒も飲んで肉も食って久しぶりに大騒ぎして皆、気がどうかしとったんだな。
月が赤い頃には何も気にせずグウグウ寝てしもうとった。
その朝俺は妹の悲鳴で目が覚めた。
俺とそこのやせっぽちと奥で寝ている婆と俺のガキ。
残ったのはこの4人だけ。
後は1人残らず村人達に殺された。30年に3人殺しただけだ。
それがただ一晩のうちにわれわれの一族はたった4人になっちまった。
いや、怨んじゃいない。初めはそりゃあ、なあ。
だが今は本当にそういうのじゃない。感謝することを覚えたんだ。
何故なら今夜みたいにまた人の肉にありつけるんだから。
Kappa Incident
“ Kappa Incident ”
“ Right! I’ve lived here for almost 200 years. That was 200 years ago. Humans call us water gods. They come to offer veggies and sake very often. And once a year on a big festival night.“Call ladies! Eat some meat!” They drink and make merry. We play with kids, dancing around a bonfire, and making noise all night. That was fun.
But!! When the sun keeps shining for long, and suffering from famine, people gradually change! Then, an epidemic came from the river, and children and old people in the village were infected. Their faces and limbs were swollen and their internal organs were rotten. It was like hell. The poisons flowed over the months, but poor humans were still there.
When my brother drowned a horse with a prank, all the villagers started to chase us. It was just a prank! By that time, no veggies or sake to offer of course. They have nothing to feed children and old humans. My bros entered the farm. They set dogs on us, beat us with sticks, and even got killed!AHH, at that time we didn’t even think about trying to get close to humans. And forest has enough food for us.”

“But, we have just one problem. Kappa also has god too. God tells us to send a human virgin shirikodama once every 30 years. Oh, shirikodama mean’s like a soul, or you can say it’s like a liver. So, we gave up on connecting with humans, no way to fix it.
Anyway, It’s just once every 30 years. I found three female’s playing around the river. I kidnapped them to offer. That night, We didn’t get drunk for a long time. We drank sake, ate meat, and everyone got upset. When the moon became red, We already slept like babies. Next morning I woke up to my sister’s scream.
Everyone was killed by humans. Just my kid, grandma, me and skinny there only survived. I killed three in 30 years. But my tribe is only 4 now! For just one night!
No, I’m not holding grudges. At first, yes I do. But, now that’s not truly. I learned to be thankful for a great dinner. Delicious human meat again tonight.”
